Force Wireless Trackpad Software Install

Problem: The Apple wireless trackpad is only recognised as a bluetooth “mouse”, without the advanced trackpad options and preference pane appearing in the System Preferences (OS 10.6.4).  No amount of repairing permissions, pairing and de-pairing of the trackpad forced the updating of the Magic Trackpad software.  Normally the software installs automatically, or is automatically collected during the system update process.

Solution: After much googling I came across this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1066?viewlocale=en_US

Which is the manual download for the software, which once installed forces the wireless trackpad into proper multi-touch mode.
